"However, before the world wised up to Icelandic culture, its economy had to crash through the ice in 2008, resulting in a national bankruptcy that turned the entire country upside down not unlike the set of metamorphosis, says co director(Along with david farr)Gigli orn gardarsson. "Before the crash, i had friends who had become billionaires in the course of four years or something,"Says gardarsson. "It was pretty insane actually,"He says,"When you think about it.Now(That everyone is broke again), It'scalm and nice.And i think people realized that money isn't everything. "And while metamorphosis is an adaptation of a german novel co created with a british collaborator, gardarsson says there are threads that connect the story of gregory samsa, the clerk who wakes up one morning to discover he's turned into a cockroach, to the economic upheaval his home country has been through over the past five years. "There's a little bit of the crash in the production,"He says. "There was a money mania going on here,"He adds. "Metamorphosis reflects a lot of that there's a lot of reference to the pretentious importance of having money and the importance of working hard and supporting each other.It touches on that, as well. "For gardarsson, who was born in iceland, grew up in norway, then returned to iceland(Where he spends about half the year when he's not on the road performing), the strength of Iceland's cultural scene lies in the determination of a small nation to preserve its unique identity. "We're very protective of the language,"He says,"And every new word like a computer will get an icelandic name, so we're very careful to give icelandic names to everything we're very protective of the culture. "At the same time, the success of people such as bjork has produced a buoyant music scene that attracts international attention. "When one person does well, It'sencouraging for a lot of other people,"He says. "Because we're so small, the attitude is often, if bjork can make it abroad, hell, so can i. "For icelander in exile thoranna sigurdardottir, a film producer who lives in los angeles, the relatively small uncommercial scale of cultural activity in iceland is what gives it the opportunity to create something special.Sigurdardottir spent five months this summer producing the icelandic scenes of darren aronofsky's new film noah, a new noah's ark story that stars russell crowe, harry potter star emma watson, oscar winner jennifer connelly and oscar winner anthony hopkins.That's one of a slew of big budget hollywood features being shot in her homeland recently, including tom cruise in oblivion, sean penn in ben stiller's the secret life of ralph lauren polo homme walter mitty and(Allegedly)An upcoming steven spielberg feature. "It's(Icelandic culture)Very rich,"She says,"Because there's more flexibility to make mistakes. "You can't really make a living out of doing art here, so there's a lot more freedom.You don't have to worry about being commercial, because there's no commercial market. "For olafson, the connecting threads between winnipeg and iceland extend beyond ethnic identity(Manitoba has the largest population of icelandic people outside of iceland).What the two share is an obvious climatic connection point:Winter. "I think there's something about climate that shapes not just your way of behaving, but your way of moving through the world and thinking about the world, in a way,"She says.
